1. Upgrade Your Skills:

This summer GTTI will be offering various programs with a focus on employability. These include, depending on the demand, Get SET for Employment and Smart Serve certification.  Call (905)-722-6300 for more information.  Also don’t forget that registration for the fall PSW program is August 23rd with a start date of September 9th!

There is also The Georgina Learning Centre which offers academic courses for adults aiming to get their GED.  They also run courses on preparing for apprenticeships right down to computer training for programs such as Microsoft Word and more.  Click here for access to their website where you can find information on the services being offered and contact information.

2. Volunteer:

Volunteerism is one of the best ways to experiment with various fields of work.  Volunteering allows you to learn about your strengths and weaknesses without the pressure of a paid job.  It is also the easiest way to get that experience that employers are always looking for.  Plus you’ll feel great giving your time to a good cause.  Also, there are often perks involved such as free admission to events!

Here are possible places to volunteer:

·        Simcoe Region Conservation Authority

·        Sutton Youth Shelter

·        Hospice Georgina

·        The Salvation Army

·        Georgina Transit

·        Georgina Arts Centre & Gallery

Most of these organizations offer long-term placements though some of them have need of volunteers for one-time events.  If you’re the type of individual who prefers volunteering for day events also look into these festivals that are looking for volunteer help.

·        Eaglewood Folk Fest

·        Georgina Arts Centre & Gallery

3. Serve on a Board, Committee, or join an Organization:

Don’t like what you see? Have a skill, experience, or enthusiasm to offer? Become a part of a board or committee and let your concerns be heard.  As a valuable member of a team you’ll be an agent of change making your town and community a better place for everyone.

Here are some organizations with boards with members from the public.

·        Georgina Public Libraries

o   Teen Advisory Board (TAG)

·        United Way
